Dr. Mark Adler, who has served as Superintendent of Ralston Public Schools since 2012, will retire from the post at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
The Ralston Public School Board will review Adler's resignation when it meets Monday night.
In his letter to the board, Adler thanks board members, students and staff for the trust they've placed in him.
"I took my responsibilities seriously and am always proud to say I am from Ralston," writes Adler. "My service to the students, staff and community of Ralston Public Schools wasn't a job but a passion that provided me with purpose."
Adler has been with Ralston Public Schools since 2008 and he's worked in public education for 32 years.
The Ralston Superintendent said his family has experienced an unthinkable tragedy and enjoyed incredible success during his tenure.
"No matter where we were on our journey, members of the Ralston Public Schools community wrapped us in their arms and carried us through," wrote Adler.
"Our family will forever be grateful."
In 2016, the Adlers shared the story of the loss of their son Reid with KETV NewsWatch 7 's Julie Cornell, and urged others to "pay it forward" in Reid's name.
Adler says he intends to retire from public education on June 30, 2023.
