BUFFALO, N.Y. (WENY) – An African American Veterans Monument was unveiled in Buffalo on Saturday.

Governor Kathy Hochul delivered remarks at the unveiling. She said it’s the first African American veterans monument in the nation.

The dedication ceremony and unveiling took place at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military park where the monument is located.

The monument is made up of twelve black pillars.

It recognizes the contributions of African Americans who served and are currently serving in all five branches of the military.

“The untelling throughout the history of the contributions of African Americans in the war and as veterans afterward. And I’m here today in my hometown to be able to see the beginnings of the writings of the wrongs,” Hochul said.

Hochul added this monument is not just for Buffalonians, this is for our nation and people from around the world, and explained this monument is long overdue.

“We might be a little late here, but at least we’re making it happen today.”
