As Autumn begins again in the Green Mountain State, more orchards in our region are preparing for an influx of customers looking to satisfy their taste for apples during the busy season."Fresh pressed cider, cider donuts, apple pies, apple crisp, all things apple," said Devin Hackett with Hackett's Orchard.Since 1967, Hackett's Orchard in South Hero has been a gathering place for many families and tourists. Hackett said it's the perfect time to visit an orchard, especially as cooler temperatures begin to prevail and the days become shorter."This past week has really kicked off the apple season with the cooler weather," Hackett said. "Two weeks ago when it was hot and 85 degrees it really wasn't conducive to apple picking. A lot of people have been waiting for cooler temps to put on their flannel and get outside."Banker's Orchard in Plattsburgh opened for the season earlier this summer. The owners said this time of year means a boost in business and more time to connect with the community.Long-time customer Stephanie Wood said visiting the orchard is a timeless tradition she now gets to share with her daughter. "We come here every year. She's supposed to be in school today but I just picked her up early so we can come here," Wood said. "It's kind of a tradition I started last year during her first year in school I'd let her play hooky and we'd come here."Nina Sullivan, owner at Banker's Orchard, said she anticipates apples will begin falling off the trees in the next two weeks.But until then, she hopes more people come out to enjoy all the orchard has to offer.
