Man arrested on drug charges after officer recognizes him for having suspended license

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Friday after a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy was conducting routine patrols in the area of State Road 37 and 16th Street.

Billy Walker

As the deputy was passing Rever’s Food & Fuel he saw 55-year-old Billy Walker pull his 2001 blue GMC Jimmy into the parking lot. He witnessed Walker exit the driver’s door and walk into the service station.

The officer knew Walker did not have a valid driver’s license.

The deputy confirmed Walker’s driving privileges were suspended and pulled into the adjacent parking lot.

Walker then exited the store and got into the driver’s seat and drove out of the parking lot and headed south on State Road 37.

The officer followed and stopped Walker. The deputy approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and spoke to Walker about him driving on a suspended driver’s license.  He told the officer “I thought I had taken care of it and they had been reinstated”. While speaking with Walker the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Walker admitted he had marijuana earlier in the day when asked.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes or joints in the center console. The total weight of marijuana was 5.8 grams. In Walker’s wallet, an officer found a baggie that contained 1.9 grams of crystal meth residue. Other illegal items were also found.

Walker was detained on charges of possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a vehicle while his driver’s license was suspended with a prior conviction.
