Local church works on healing relationship with LGBTQ+ community

Bonsack United Methodist of Roanoke is a ‘reconciling church’

ROANOKE, Va. – A church in Roanoke is working to break the stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ members and the church.

Bonsack United Methodist Church is known as a “reconciling” church, one that seeks inclusion and prioritizes healing relationships with the LGBTQ+ community.

Reverend Stan Mitchell of Gracepointe Church in Nashville spoke to the congregation today regarding inclusivity.

He has gone from recommending conversion therapy to openly welcoming those in the LGBTQ+ community to church over the past few years.

“Gracepointe Church, Evangelical church, buckle of the Bible Belt Nashville, our congregation made the decision that we had been wrong before. And we were going to open our arms to the community fully,” Mitchell said.

Reverend Mitchell now travels to churches around the country, like Bonsack United Methodist, to help them with their mission of inclusion.
