NTSB: New Vehicles Should Be Able to Detect Blood Alcohol Level

The National Transportation Safety Board wants all new vehicles to be able to check drivers' alcohol levels.

The goal is to make roads safer by curbing drunk driving and speed-related deaths. The NTSB has no regulatory authority. So, they released a report recommending officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) leverage tech to reduce crashes.

“If there is a tool we can use or something we can implement into an automobile that will make us that much safer, great,” Robert Siciliano, a security analyst, said. “But at what risk to our privacy might that service or item be?”

Lots of questions have yet to be answered if the NHTSA agrees to implement the recommendations, including how much it will cost.

Officials with the NTSB agree that finding, implementing, and perfecting the alcohol tests will likely take years. Roadway deaths spiked in 2021 after Americans emerged from pandemic-era stay-at-home orders.
