Warning: The following contains spoilers from Tuesday’s New Amsterdam premiere. Proceed at your own risk!
Dr. Lauren Bloom got an unwelcome surprise during New Amsterdam‘s fifth and final season: After couch surfing, the doc went back to her place to ask her ex Leyla if she could stay in the spare room. Leyla was OK with the idea, but thought Lauren should know that she now has a new girlfriend. So are things officially done between Lauren and Leyla? Or might there still be some hope for a reconciliation?
“It’s over,” showrunner David Schulner tells TVLine. “We told their story for two seasons, and they changed each other in such profound ways.” But given that Lauren donated money to the hospital to secure Leyla a residency position, “there was poison in the well — from the start. And it would have hurt them both if they kept going back to it.” (If you need a refresher on that messiness and how Leyla reacted to the revelation, click here.)
As for whether Lauren will actually shack up with Leyla and her new love, “while that would make for some fun/horrible drama, Lauren has come too far as a character to willingly enter into that,” Schulner says.
Instead of romance, family will play a big role in Lauren’s Season 5 arc. As TVLine exclusively reported, Kathryn Prescott (Finding Carter, the UK’s Skins) will recur as Lauren’s estranged sister, Vanessa, who is described as “a wild child who refuses to grow up, get a job, stay sober and play by the rules.”
“As we approach the end of the series, we wanted to give each character the opportunity to heal their deepest wounds. And for Bloom, it was abandoning her sister to save herself,” Schulner previously shared. “Now Bloom has to confront the damage done and see if she can repair it — even if it means sacrificing her hard-won sobriety.”

Thank god. Have her and Reynolds make it work this time.
i’m all in on this one too
There was some really unfortunate planning on the part of this show’s writers that so many of the characters have sad love lives at the same time!
Never cared for Lauren and Leyla.
It’s Lauren’s place. Whether Lauren is living in a room of it or not, it’s not cool for Leyla to bring any dates there. Her goal is to be able to move out as fast as possible. It doesn’t matter if Lauren is being accommodating toward the immigration issue or not.
Agree 100%
agree agree agree 100000%
Good.Never likes the relationship.Just something about how they came together.Put her and Reynolds back together
Loved the relationship. They really cared for each other. New girlfriend has an attitude..Lauren an d Reynolds have nothing in common
I’m not even going to watch this season. They have half a season…Freema left the show. They should have ended this drama after last season.
Never liked them together. Leila should move put as soon as possible! Have Lauren work on the relationship with her sister and stay true to her sobriety!
And this is why I won’t be watching this final season
Knowing there’s no way forward for my favorite TV couple kind of makes me not want to watch the show anymore. Season 3 really hooked me with all of the sweet Lauren & Leyla moments, then they screwed it up beyond belief. I really hate that they ruined it for so many loyal fans. Shame on them.
Them getting back together and Helen possibly coming back to the hospital were the main reasons I watched the show and now that I’ve read the spoiler for those two confirms my decision that I’m done with the show. It was fun while it lasted though.
No didn’t want to see them together, but she needs to get out of Laurens apartment with her new love, let them find their own place.
Sorry, not sorry. Their relationship lacked any type of chemistry. Let’s talk about the chemistry between Bloom and Reynolds, now that was everything until the powers that be erased it.
i actually didn’t watch for the relationship between helen and max – i love ryan eggold and everything he’s been on, so I’ll watch it til the end…love this show.
What they did with this relationship was absolutely awful. They destroyed both characters last season and baited their queer female viewers. They vilified both WOC, broke up both interracial couples, and threw their fans away. I love Shiva, but if this was the plan for Leyla, they needed to let her go pursue her dreams in Spokane and left Leyren with its dignity. I have quit watching.
I completely agree with you I just finish the series recently and as an lgbt member I feel betray. If one relationship could be save it would be this one. Bloom work so hard with herself and deserve her happinesses with or without Layla. The story was going just fine. But the only Layla being ungrateful with her help and starting a new relationship is like seeing the L word all over again. Not all lesbians move on that fast or use their partners like that. We could do better within the community. Bloom deserve her happiness with a woman or a aman.
You are missing a wonderful opportunity to tell a story of love and redemption in bringing these two characters back together. Learning how to navigate deeper areas of connecting beyond the controls of money or the lack thereof. This show is all about love and finding ways of being better, more respectful compassionate humans in the area of healthcare and in the personal lives of the characters. I think you REALLY missed the boat in blowing up the relationship between Lauren and Layla. You know the show is ending and you are leaving the story line jagged and incomplete.
I liked the beginning; that Lauren and Leyla found eachother; but after that they screwed up; with making it about Lauren more than both. The angle of Leyla coming to the USA(being lesbian in Pakistan is an angle they could look at; and meaning the views on it from family and friends). Then this stuff; together with Max and Helen; they stuffed up too many things
The writers really screwed this show up. I love Ryan Eggold and that’s the only reason I’m still watching. The London arc was boring. Leyla and Bloom story was way too drawn out. Jocko with the other doctor’s wife was superfluous. They should have kept it simple from the medical side and Max’s personal life as a single father. It could have had a long run IMO.
Yes I wanted them back together i think leyla is ridiculous to be upset at bloom for the donation. If anything it shows how much she loved leyla and was willing to donate that money quietly so that it wasnt held over leylas head. Bloom deserves better then Leyla and deserves someone who appreciates all that she does. What did Leyla ever do for Bloom.
