At least 2 people killed during unsanctioned car event in Wildwood

WILDWOOD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — At least two people were killed, and others injured, according to officials, during an unsanctioned car rally in Wildwood Saturday night.

Authorities said hundreds, if not thousands of people went to the shore this weekend for a pop-up car rally that was not approved by the city.

Video circulating on social media showed cars zipping around the island town way above the speed limit.

The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said late Saturday night near the Wildwood Convention Center, 37-year-old Gerald White from Pittsburgh hit a 2014 Honda Civic, then two pedestrians, and took off.

One bystander, 18-year-old Lindsay Weakland from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, died at the scene. 34-year-old Timothy Ogden from Clayton, New Jersey was inside the Honda and was hurt in the crash. He was taken to the hospital where he died. Investigators said two others were seriously injured.

White is facing several charges and is currently in custody.

Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said there was another crash involving a golf cart that hurt others, but details on that are still unclear.

The Wildwood Board of Commissioners said earlier this weekend that they were aware of the unsanctioned event. At one point Saturday, officials said Wildwood's mayor was working with the governor's office to coordinate additional support, to assist neighboring towns who assisted in response efforts.
