An altercation Saturday night in Metropolis resulted in shots fired and two people hospitalized by the time the scene was cleared on Sunday morning.

According to Metropolis Police, officers went to a home in the 400 block of West 20th Street just before 11 p.m.

They said a 33-year-old man from Wickliffe had gone to the residence to purchase an item for sale.

Officers said an altercation ensued and as the man was leaving, he was shot by a 59-year-old female who was at the residence.

Police attempted to make contact with the woman but she would not answer the door.

Police secured the area until an Illinois State Police SWAT team and a negotiator arrived.

Around 8 a.m. on Sunday, they were able to enter the residence and locate the woman, who police said appeared to have overdosed on pills.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Charges are pending, and no names have been released.
