HOUGHTON — Despite a dominant victory from Fillmore’s Olivia Chiu, the Lady Lions of Wellsville woke up bright and early Saturday morning and delivered their eighth straight win to start their season, coming up with a 4-1 victory over the road at Houghton University against host Fillmore.

The Lady Lions (8-0) victory was powered by a sweep of doubles action, and headed by the first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Hanna Miles, who fought their way through both a first-set tiebreak and second-set shutout to deliver a comeback finish against the team of Kali White and Kristina Wilcox for the Lady Eagles.

Kelsey Seely and Mackenzie Weinhauer would also fight their way through a first-set tiebreak for the visitors in the opening set, using the momentum to complete a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set victory at second doubles over Emma Hopkins and Annika Wiltsey.

In the singles matches, Sarah Mattison and McKenna Wonderling would finish off the match win for the Lady Lions with triumphs of their own, with Mattison taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over Clair Schilke at second singles, and a 6-3, 6-0 win for Wonderling at third singles over Molly Mahoney.

Chiu was the lone victor for the Lady Eagles (5-3) on the court, as she came away victorious with a 6-1, 6-2 finish over Samantha Bidzerkowny.

Both teams are back on their home courts Monday night in a pair 5 p.m. first serves, as the Lady Lions take aim at a ninth straight win with a visit from Avoca/Prattsburgh, while Fillmore plays host to red hot Alfred-Almond.
