300th Skidmore win for Beth Hallenbeck; Thoroughbreds beat Saints 2-0

SARATOOGA SPRINGS. N.Y.— The Skidmore College field hockey team opened Liberty League play with a 2-0 win over St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park. The win moves the Thoroughbreds to 6-2 and is the 300th win at Skidmore for head coach Beth Hallenbeck. The Saints re 4-3.
  • Hallenbeck has a 300-114-2 record in 22 years at Skidmore and is 370-191-3 overall in 32 seasons as head coach. Her Skidmore teams have won nine league championships and played in 13 NCAA Division III Championship Tournaments. Including three final four appearances.
  • Neither team could find the net in the first half. CC Wetter finally solved the SLU defense when Kayla Hassett skillfully moved the ball along the end line, distributing it to Wetter who poked it in from right in front at 43:56.
  • Hassett scored an insurance goal at 54:36, her third of the season.
  • Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence 17-11 and had an 11-7 penalty corner advantage. Victoria Bodnar had seven saves, six in the second half, for the shutout. Bodnar had back-to-back saves off a late penalty corner to keep it 2-0. Carla Vredenburg kept the Saints in the game with 11 saves.
  • The game marked the 36th meeting between the teams. The Thoroughbreds hold a 23-13 advantage in the series that began in 1992.
  • None of the eight Liberty League teams have overall losing records.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Castleton University in a nonleague game on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
