Pioneers Fall 3-1 to South Dakota After Taking First Set

VERMILLION, SD --The Denver volleyball team took the first set, but couldn't hang on and lost 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 16-25, 20-25) to the South Dakota Coyotes Saturday on the road at Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The loss dropped Denver's record to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in Summit play, snapping a four-match winning streak. 

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from Jordan Lockwood, who registered 11 kills and 16 digs on the day. Hailey Green also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Ryen Wilkens chipped in for with 22 digs to go with six blocks from Brianna Green.

SET 1 | The Pioneers grabbed control of the set-one lead at 2-1 and never trailed to win 25-20. Denver led by six points at 15-9 before finishing off the set. Denver also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four South Dakota attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Denver then dropped set two 25-18, tying the match at a set apiece. The Pioneers fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | A third-set loss put Denver behind 2-1. The Pioneers dropped a tough set 25-16. Denver trailed by as many as nine points as South Dakota grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was tied up six times before the Coyotes took over the lead.

SET 4 | Denver lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-20. The Pioneers trailed by as many as seven points as South Dakota grabbed the advantage for good at 20-19 and Denver was never able to recover in a set that was knotted up two times before the Coyotes took over in the second half of the stanza.
