A Season Of Sunsets

OSWEGO COUNTY – As the warmth of summer gives way to the first cool breezes of autumn, a time of reflection arrives.

Just like the setting sun reflects on the massive waterscape of Lake Ontario, those of us lucky enough to live in Oswego County take a little time to reflect on the memories of the past summer.

The warm season always seems to pass by quickly, as we make the most of our time in the sun to engage in the activities that are made possible by the fleeting Upstate New York summer.

Evening after evening, the sun disappears into the lake with a spectacular show of color and dramatic light as the earth rotates and our part of it settles into night.

Oswego County is blessed with an ideal stage to watch this inexpensive show, with an extensive shoreline that allows us to see a western horizon perfectly aligned with the sun’s pathway from above to below the visible sky.

Certain weather conditions create dramatic sunsets and passing weather system’s roll clouds through the region; perfectly suited to capture the colors and shadows that slowly evolve and deepen as the sun sinks down through them.

When the wind indicates the passage of a cold front, I set up cameras knowing that tonight’s show is going to be worth watching.

Some evenings are still and silent, with the surface of the massive lake as smooth as a piece of glass – ready to reflect the most subtle shades of the warm tones projected by the glowing ball of helium and hydrogen.

The lake appears as green as a piece of beach glass while it is warm enough for mid-summer swimming, and the visible tones of the water darken as the summer progresses and the sun’s angle lowers.

As we wind furthers into the fall, the lake becomes restless and waves roll in from distant disturbances; crashing even when the wind is still.

I hope you enjoy this collection and that it keeps the memory of the warm winds of summer in your mind as we head into another inevitable season of cold and snow.

Nothing lasts forever and when the sun once again shows its strength in the spring, I will be out with my cameras again capturing another set of brilliant sunsets for all of us to enjoy.
