Bobcats start slow, rally late in loss at Pierce | Local roundup

The Paradise High School Bobcats couldn’t overcome a slow start at Pierce on Friday night before losing 28-19.

The Bears got off to a 21-0 lead by scoring three touchdowns before the Bobcats finally got on the board thanks to  Brady Bettencourt’s 18-yard run with less than a minute to go in the first half.

Bettencourt would also throw a 10- yard touchdown pass to Dustin Jones with less than a minute to go in the third quarter pass and run for a 2-yard touchdown with less than 9 minutes to go in the game.

Izaiah Bennett had an interception to set up that scoring drive for the Bobcats (1-3), who will host Shasta next Friday night in the final pre-league game.

West Park 34, Chico 19: The Panthers fell to 1-4 in their first home loss. Jaden Neugebauer scored on a rushing TD to cut the West Park lead to 13-6 at halftime. But no other stats were provided for this game.

The Panthers won’t be in action again until October 7, when they open Eastern Athletic League play against Red Bluff.

Colusa 32, Biggs 0: Davis Long gained 65 yards on 22 carries while Zach Smith chipped in with 42 yards on 13 carries in the Bulldogs’ home loss to Colusa (5-0). The Wolverines will host Trinity high on Friday night.

Hamilton 51, Live Oak 8:  Diego Sanchez threw six touchdown passes, five of them to Connor Bonesio, to lift the Braves to their third win in four games this year. Sanchez completed 14 of 21 passes for 326 yards in the victory. Julian Olivarez gained 150 yards on just eight carries and scored a touchdown for Hamilton, while Omar Sanchez caught a 54-yard touchdown pass.

College men’s soccer

Chico State 2, Sonoma State 1: The Wildcats opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the win over the Seawolves. Preston Moll and Adrian Fontanelli scored their first goals for Chico State while helping limit the Seawolves to two shots on goal.

The Wildcats, who entered the weekend ranked No. 8 in the West Region, will now head to San Francisco State for Sunday’s 11:30 a.m. showdown with a record of 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the CCAA.

Butte 3, Yuba 0: The Roadrunners won their third straight game by shutout with the win over Yuba. Butte got goals from Simon Huebner, George Shaw and Mohamed Benguellal.

Shinkai Kojima, Sander Trevor and  Eivind Bergslokken all had assists for Butte (5-1-3). The Roadrunners will play three games next week, starting with a Tuesday trip to the College of Redwoods.

College women’s soccer

Chico State 3, Sonoma State 1: Mackenzie Gill scored two goals to lift Chico State to win its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Rohnert Park. Susanna Garcia scored a goal and assisted on one of Gill’s goals. Piper Matson also had an assist for Chico State, who travels to play at San Francisco State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

The win at Sonoma State was the first for the Wildcats in nearly 11 years. The Wildcats are now 4-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the CCAA.

Butte 2, Solano 1:  Rylee Jellison’s first college goal in the 44th minute broke a 1-1 tie and was enough to lift the Roadrunners to the win over Solano. Sadie Weber’s third goal of the year gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead just 20 minutes into the match. Alexis Lince and Sofia Maldonado each had assists in the win.

Butte’s defense made the two goals stand up as goalkeeper Maddy Acosta collected four saves. On Tuesday, the Roadrunners conclude their four-game road trip when they play College of Redwoods.

College volleyball

East Bay 3, Chico State 1: The Wildcats won the opening set against visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday night, 25-15, but from there, the Pioneers dominated the match, winning 25-10, 25-18, and 25-21 at Acker Gym.

Bree Rodriguez and Zoe DiNardo led the Wildcats with nine kills apiece, while Grace Shepherd and Cassidy Herbert each floored six winners on the evening. DiNardo contributed seven blocks, with Rodriguez totaling five blocks at the net. Brooke Ono collected 32 assists for the ‘Cats, with Jessie Camarillo adding a team-high 18 digs.

Chico State slipped to 3-9 on the season and 1-4 in the CCAA with Friday’s loss, while Cal State East Bay improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
