A transient has been fined after Iowa City Police say he stole bottles of liquor from the same convenience store twice on the same morning.

Officers were called to the South Gilbert Street Kum & Go just before 11am on Tuesday for an intoxicated subject attempting to shoplift.

Arriving officers discovered 46-year-old Peter Mendoza had attempted to pay for some items, but had a $14 bottle of brandy in his pocket. Kum & Go employees told investigators that Mendoza had also stolen a $34 bottle of Jack Daniels at 3:30 that same morning.

Mendoza allegedly showed signs of intoxication and refused breath testing. Other neighboring businesses reported theft and intoxication issues with Mendoza as well. He was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication and two counts of 5th Degree Theft. He pleaded guilty to all three counts on Wednesday and was fined $315.
