STILLWATER, Okla.  ––
The University of Tulsa men's team competed with some of the top teams in the nation, taking fifth place at the Cowboy Jamboree on the OSU Cross Country Course Saturday morning.

It was a preview of the national championship as the No. 6 Golden Hurricane placed just behind the top four teams in the nation.

"We were really happy with today," Coach Taylor Gulley said. "We knew coming in it was a loaded meet, which is kind of rare to have this caliber of a meet in our sport in September. To battle against eight of the top 12 teams and 10 of the top 15 and coming out in fifth was a strong result, and we feel like we're in a fantastic spot to have a special season."

Cormac Dalton finished in 12th place, navigating the 8k course in 23:39.7 to pace the Hurricane. Michael Power (18th) and Shay McEvoy (22nd) followed closely behind in 23:45.3 and 23:47.5, respectively.

In all, 11 Tulsa men navigated the course on Saturday and to a man put in a solid performance.

"That's a huge message that we've been trying to push early in the season," Gulley said. "Everyone has a responsibility to help this team reach its full potential. It's a great feeling to come out on a day like today, in this high caliber of a meet, and race 11 guys and walk away knowing all of them did their part and went to battle for their teammates and the University of Tulsa."

Layla Roebke paced the Tulsa women in the 6k race, placing 50th in 21:18.5 as the Hurricane finished 15th. Chloe Hershenow finished 20 seconds behind Roebke at 21:38.0.

Like the men's race, the women's even was chock full of talented teams, giving a lot of young runners experience in a competitive meet.

"We got off too hard," Coach Steve Gulley said. "I think that's a good problem to have when you go to a meet where there's that many good teams. We weren't psyched out, but we weren't at the fitness level to back that up. It's a step forward and I am happy with the performance, but if we're going to go out that strong, we'll have to learn to back it up.

Next up for the Golden Hurricane is the Chili Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
