Live blog: Hawaii football at New Mexico State

The most mysterious game of Hawaii’s 2022 season is set to begin as the Rainbow Warriors take on New Mexico State.

Despite going 2-0 against New Mexico State in 2021, Hawaii (1-3) enters its 2022 matchup against the Aggies (0-4) as underdogs.

Along with South Florida, the ‘Bows are just one of two teams without a passing touchdown in 2022. Brayden Schager, who is getting his first start since the season opener, is hoping to change that. UH practiced multiple run and shoot concepts this week and looks to implement more of a pass-happy look. But what exactly will it look like? New Mexico State 45, Hawaii 26, Final

5:27: NMSU runs out the clock to defeat Hawaii by a final of 45-26. A bad loss for UH, which falls to 1-4 heading into its bye week and is going through a bit of an identity crisis on both sides of the ball.

5:22: Hawaii doesn’t go for an onside kick and NMSU will probably run the clock out to victory.

5:21: A 1-yard rush by Dedrick Parson makes this game 45-26 with 1:28 to go. Hawaii goes for 2 but doesn’t convert.

5:02: Hawaii will start from its own 25. Barring a miracle, this game is pretty much over.

5:01: New Mexico State extends its leads to 45-20 with 6:53 left on a 26-yard field goal by Brett Money.

4:51: Hawaii opts to kick a 29-yard field goal on fourth down to trim the NMSU lead to 42-20 with 10:55 left in the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

4:37: Virdell Edwards hauls in an interception for UH on its own 43 with 1:37 left in the third.

4:35: TOUCHDOWN RAINBOW WARRIORS. Jalen Walthall hauls in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Schager, Hawaii’s first passing touchdown of the season. But the ‘Bows still trail 42-17 with 1:46 left in the third.

4:18: TOUCHDOWN NEW MEXICO STATE. Aggies extend their lead to 42-10 with 7:02 left in the third quarter as Ahmonte Watkins scores on a 1-yard rush as UH hits a new bottom as a program.

4:12: Hawaii doesn’t get much traction on offense and punts, which is returned to the UH 40 with 10:43 left in the third quarter.

4:07: Hawaii forces a three-and-out and punt and will start from its own 29 with 12:09 left in the third.

4:00: New Mexico State will start from its own 25 after a touchback on the kickoff.

THIRD QUARTER

3:42: Hawaii heads into halftime trailing 35-10. Aggies will receive the second half kickoff.

3:36: TOUCHDOWN NMSU. The onslaught is on. The Aggies score on a trick play from Jamoni Jones to Star Thomas, followed by a 1-yard score from Frakes to Thomaz Whitford. Hawaii trails 35-10 with 16 seconds left in the second quarter.

3:30: Hawaii turns it over on downs. New Mexico State gets the ball back with 2 minutes left in the second quarter.

3:29: New Mexico State calls timeout as Hawaii faces fourth-and-3 at the NMSU 28 with 2:05 left in the second quarter.

3:26: Hawaii will start from its own 35 after the ensuing kickoff goes out of bounds.

3:24: TOUCHDOWN NEW MEXICO STATE. Hawaii is officially in the danger zone. Jamoni Jones’ second touchdown of the day, this time from two yards out, gives the Aggies a 28-10 lead over Hawaii with 3:41 left in the second quarter. NMSU will also receive the second half kickoff.

3:14: Hawaii goes three-and-out and punts to the NMSU 32 with 7:13 left in the first half, giving momentum right back to the Aggies.

3:09: Hawaii gets the three-and-out and punt it desperately needed and will start from its own 16 with 9:01 left in the second quarter.

3:04: Hawaii gets all the way to the NMSU 6 but can’t score on third down and settles for a 23-yard Matthew Shipley field goal. NMSU’s lead has been trimmed to 21-10 with 10:34 left in the second quarter.

2:54: Hawaii to begin from its own 4 after a holding call on the ensuing kickoff and desperately needs to get something going here.

2:53: TOUCHDOWN NMSU. Hawaii is in serious trouble now as Jamoni Jones runs in a 3-yard score to put the Aggies up 21-7 with 14:57 left in the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

2:49: The first quarter ends with New Mexico state driving deep to the Hawaii 3. The Aggies racked up 187 rushing yards in the first quarter.

2:46: Hawaii gains a first down but can’t get another as Schager gets sacked on third down. Aggies to start on their own 32 with 1:13 left in the first quarter.

2:41: Hawaii to start from its 25 after a touchback.

2:39: TOUCHDOWN AGGIES. New Mexico State is in the lead as Gavin Frakes fools the Hawaii defense with an 20-yard option keeper with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

2:31: Hawaii goes three-and-out and takes just one minute off the clock. NMSU gets the ball back on its own 36 with 8 minutes left in the first quarter.

2:28: Hawaii will begin from its own 25 after a touchback on the ensuing kickoff. Time to see if Schager and the rest of the offense can build on the first drive.

2:26: TOUCHDOWN NEW MEXICO STATE. It doesn’t take long for the Aggies to respond as Star Thomas takes a fourth-and-1 handoff 27 yards TO THE HOUSE. The extra point is good and the game is tied at 7 with 9 minutes left in the first quarter.

2:17: NMSU will begin from its own 25 after a touchback on the kickoff.

2:16: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. Despite using a timeout before its first offensive play, the Rainbow Warriors put together an impressive opening drive, capped off by a 1-yard rush by Dedrick Parson. Schager was 3-for-3 with 39 yards on that drive as well.

2:08 p.m. HST: New Mexico State wins the toss and defers to the second half. Hawaii will receive to begin this game. UH will begin from its own 25 after a touchback on the kickoff.
