Truck convoy raises money for Delaware Special Olympics

HARRINGTON, Del.- Nearly 200 truck drivers from across the area met at the Delaware State Fairgrounds for a police-escorted 29-mile ride through Kent County, raising money and awareness for the Delaware Special Olympics.

But before truckers hit the road- they held an auction for the Special Olympics, got to meet the athletes who they help support, and were awarded for the number of years the truckers have been part of the event.

The athletes say they look forward to the convoy every year, especially Richard Dunning who got to present the truckers with the award.

“I love handing them out and making them all smile all the drivers seeing that big smile when you come out of the special Olympics you have a big experience of like all your friends and teammates cheering and having fun,” Dunning said.

And the truck drivers say they give that joy right back.

“We come every year it’s something very special to all of us drivers,” said Walmart Trucker Tom Laffert, adding “going through these towns and villages on these backroads you see the little kids and the families and parents they see us coming through and it gives them hope to keep pushing forward and when we see their faces it’s all worth it.”
