Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — There was a large police presence in the area of Alameda and Galena after an officer-involved shooting killed one.

According to the Aurora Police Department, multiple officers were in the area of Alameda Avenue and Galena Way attempting to make contact with two suspects in a stolen vehicle around 3:30 p.m.

According to Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, while APD was working to make contact with two suspects, one person ran north across Alameda and officers pursued the suspect.

The suspect turned around and produced a weapon while threatening the officers. Thomas said they believe two officers then fired their weapons and struck the suspect.

The suspect was transported to the local hospital with serious injuries, but Thomas confirmed the suspect has been pronounced dead. The second suspect was taken into custody.

The area of the shooting is south of the CommonGround Golf Course and sits on the boundary between Aurora and Denver. Both police agencies responded to the scene, but Thomas said the pursuit began in Denver and ended in Aurora.

DPD was on scene assisting APD, but no Denver officers were involved. Since the incident occurred within the boundaries of Denver, DPD will lead the investigation.

Alameda is closed in both directions between Dayton Street and Havana Street, officers expect the closure to last for several hours. Officers are asking everyone to avoid the area.
