PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead in Northeast Philadelphia after police say he was hit by a car while crossing the street Friday.

Authorities say it happened around 9:30 p.m. in the Mayfair area, at the intersection of Cottman and Brous avenues. Video surveillance showed a black vehicle, possibly a Mercedes-Benz S500, traveling at a very high speed.

"The vehicle lost quite a bit of its front end after the collision, and the pedestrian that was walking across was thrown a considerable distance following the collision," said Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace, "probably a distance of about ... 100-150 feet. So this was a very severe collision."

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Officials say the car continued after the collision, including going through a red light camera. It also sideswiped a 2006 Hyundai, before fleeing the scene. Police will look at that to see if they can find a license plate number and other helpful information.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Accident Investigation Division at 215-685-3180.
