Sovereign citizen’s car stereo creates international incident at Pinecrest: Orange Police Blotter

Police explained to the member of the Moor sovereign nation that he still needed to present an official form of I.D. -- as well as turn the sound down in his convertible.

ORANGE, Ohio

Disorderly conduct, obstructing official business: Wall Street

Several Pinecrest visitors flagged down a passing police lieutenant around 1:15 p.m. Sept. 16 regarding a white convertible with gold wheels playing music very loud and causing a disturbance.

Police spotted a car matching that description in the Whole Foods parking lot, with the music still playing at a very high level and the driver refusing to provide identification other than handing over a card declaring him to be a member of the Moorish sovereign nation.

He explained he did not need a state I.D. or driver’s license because he had a right to travel under the Constitution. Police told him he still needed some proper form of identification.

After several more attempts, the driver was asked to get out of the car and was eventually handcuffed, despite some tensing of his arms that made it somewhat difficult.

A state I.D. was located and the Richmond Heights man, 43, was taken to the Solon jail to await charges filed and bond set through Bedford Municipal Court.

Theft: Orange Place, Harvard Road

Police responded to the Drury Inn & Suites on the afternoon of Sept. 16, with a manager reporting that an envelope containing $569 cash was missing from the office.

The manager, 32, from Columbia Station, said she had placed the deposit envelope on a desk around 10:45 a.m. and was gone for about 10 minutes to address another issue.

Surveillance cameras showed one employee, no age or address listed, coming out of the office in that time span, then walking out to speak to the occupants of a Ford truck with a landscaping trailer attached.

When the person of interest was asked about it, she said the parties in the truck were landlords for another Drury employee and she was asking about becoming a tenant there herself.

That other employee, 48, from Cleveland, said she was handing them some required paperwork. When the person of interest came up, there was a wad of cash sticking out of her cell phone case.

She thought this was suspicious, since the employee shown in the camera footage had asked her for $5 earlier that morning, as detectives continued their investigation.

Threats: Orange Place

A Savannah, Ga., woman, 34, reported Sept. 15 from the Extended Stay North that she had exchanged text messages with a Cleveland woman, 33, about an overdue amount of money owed for a vehicle that the Cleveland woman owns, although it is registered to the Georgia woman.

During this exchange, the Cleveland woman allegedly stated she would kill the Georgia woman, a threat the latter believed she was capable of carrying out. She also suspected the Cleveland woman had stolen her firearm although it would not have happened in Orange.

Police contacted the Cleveland woman, who said the two had been friends since childhood and she could not register her own car since her license was suspended.

So the Georgia woman agreed to do it for $300, of which $150 was still owed. The Cleveland woman added that threats were made on both sides of the ledger, and none of hers were to be taken literally. Neither party had replied by the end of the day to a police request for screenshots.

Disorderly conduct-intoxication: Chagrin Boulevard, Orange Place

Police were called to the Shell True North just before noon Sept. 17, regarding a woman who attempted to steal a bottle of wine, but shattered it in the process. Police found a woman matching the description, including a broken wine bottle in tow and a cut on her arm, for which she declined medical transport.

True North declined to press theft charges although management planned to prosecute the Chagrin Falls woman, 48, if she returned to any part of the gas station. She was cited and then turned over to her husband.

Disturbance, disorderly conduct: Orange Place

Police responded to the Wasabi Steak House parking lot at 9:16 p.m. Sept. 16, where two Euclid women, ages 30 and 44, were reportedly fighting.

Both parties explained family trouble in their own different versions and police were unable to determine a primary aggressor, as both combatants described the physical altercation.

One woman said she was pregnant but declined medical transport, while the other refused treatment at the scene, with both being cited.

Lost property: Orange Place

A Lorain man, 38, reported that sometime between June and Sept. 15, about $1,920 worth of personal property disappeared, believed to have been stolen from his room at the Extended Stay South.

Among the missing items were three GoPro Hero Max 9 cameras, three Hypermax batteries, and four battery charging stations, with the police report for documentation purposes only.

Fraud: Lander Road

A couple, ages 74 and 82, reported Sept, 13 that they may have been the victims of bank fraud, with a full police investigation to follow.
