As Farrell Ford approaches 90, the Clark County artist responsible for promoting the local art community reflects on her accomplishments of late. A reception honoring Ford and her contributions to the arts will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Arkadelphia Arts Center, 625 Main St.
What did you do during the height of the Covid pandemic?
I wrote a book about my life, including family history, and short stories about interesting things that have happened to me. My children say they are very happy to have it.”
What has required the most courage so far?
Getting old — not a good thing!
What is your favorite color?
Sage green. It is a very earthy color. I have loved the outdoors since I was a kid. When I have gotten all I can stand I go to the woods. It has a renewing effect and I feel at home with nature. As a kid I would climb trees and sit, watching birds, squirrels and sometimes folks that didn’t know I was there. I got a new perspective from high up in that tree.
Tell us something most don’t know about you.
Well, my grandson wanted a tattoo but was apprehensive about the whole thing. I told him I would go with him and would get one, too. It’s of a small blue butterfly on my shoulder. I was 70 years old at the time.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
My children. I am so happy and pleased with them! I am also very proud of the Arkadelphia Arts Center and how the exhibits and programs of the Caddo River Art Guild and the Clark County Arts and Humanities Council have helped to meld our diverse community.
What are your strengths?
Several things. I have always been goal-oriented, and I have a strong determination to do the right thing. I’m honest to a fault — maybe that’s not considered a strength to others. (Smiles) I enjoy figuring out how to get things done no matter the obstacles: find the solution. I think that is why I decided to go from junior high art teacher into school counseling, to help the students with their issues.
What else about you?
When I was a teen, classmates came to me for advice. My husband, who was also a classmate and is my biggest fan, says that I had a commanding presence but was not a bully, and that I was extremely level-headed for my age. At almost 90 years old it is difficult to concede that I am not strong mentally and physically anymore. As I said, getting old is not a good thing! But I enjoy my family, my swarm of hummingbirds, and Mother Nature every day.
