POWNAL (WGME)— Police allege that a mother and teenager from Pownal were drunk driving following a car crash on Brown Rd near Hallowell Rd.
At approximately 12:19 am, on Saturday, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department was notified that a Toyota Rav4 was upside down in a field and appeared to have received extensive damage.
Police say that the car went off the road to the left, down an embankment, and then allegedly hit some trees before rolling over.
Passengers Zane Campbell (19) and Jonathan Doyle (19) were reportedly ejected from the vehicle during the crash, as neither of them were wearing a seatbelt. Both passengers were transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, Shaina Curry (19) from Freeport, was evaluated on the scene and released.
The cause of the crash is under investigation but police believe that alcohol and speed were factors leading to the accident.
As a result of the investigation, 19 year-old Jack Kelley of Durham was charged with operating without a license after alcohol was found in his system, violating the zero tolerance law.
Jack’s mother, Margaret Kelley of Durham (53) drove herself to the scene and was also charged with operating under the influence.
