SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Every year, several thousand California students who meet the University of California system’s grade point average for admission aren’t accepted due to missing college prep course requirements.

A new pilot program is expected to save spots for those 3.0-and-higher GPA students starting next school year, as long as they complete the courses at community college.

KCBS Radio anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke to Michal Kurlaender, faculty co-director of Policy Analysis for California Education, this week about the program.

“This idea that there’s a spot waiting for you is an important message to send,” said Kurlaender, who added that the details of the program are still “being ironed out.”

She also said that the program is intended to address inequality. While some students in the state have access to the correct courses and guidance, others do not. In the future, Kurlaender hopes to see all high schools in the state offer these courses so students would not be required to complete them at community college.

Even so, she said “I applaud UC,” for creating the program and opening up more opportunities for students.

“Starting with the admissions cycle in spring 2023, UC applicants who meet the Dual Admission program eligibility criteria will receive a letter inviting them to participate in the program,” said the University of California earlier this month. “It will include a conditional offer of UC admission to the six campuses that participate in the Transfer Admission Guarantee program, including provisional information about federal, state and University financial aid.”

UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz are the six participating campuses.
