Woman shot to death at Wallace Park in NW Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman was shot and killed in a Northwest Portland park not far from Chapman Elementary School late Friday night, authorities said.

Officer rushed to the scene at Wallace Park at NW 25th and Pettygrove and found the woman gravely wounded. Paramedics arrived but the woman, whose name and age have not yet been released, died before being taken to a hospital.

Investigators cordoned off the basketball court area with crime tape and spent a long time searching for evidence.

Wallace Park is a very popular area that is often very busy. Some neighbors who spoke with KOIN 6 News said they heard gunshots.

But Carina Hughes, who lives across from the park and brings her dog there daily, was sleeping and didn’t hear the gunfire. She didn’t know anything about it until the morning when she saw police still investigating in the park.

“It’s sad and it’s very terrifying to live in a neighborhood, I’ve lived here all my life and things like that never happened before,” Hughes told KOIN 6 News. “I know the city is having problems but I always felt like around this area is pretty patrolled I thought and pretty watched.”

Homicide investigators are working the case and at this time no arrests have been made. The case number is 22-257119.
