A man who was running from Cayce police fell off the top level of a balcony outside the Columbia Convention Center and died.
Officials say a Cayce police officer approached a vehicle with two people in it at Guignard Park after the park closed for the day, around 1:30 a.m.
As the officer walked up to the vehicle, the suspects drove off quickly, eventually crashing at the Columbia Convention Center. The driver ran off.
Officers did not chase after the driver, because they were helping the passenger who was still in the vehicle.
Police say the driver who had run off fell from the top of the upper-level balcony outside the Convention Center to the lower level. He died from the fall. The man was wanted on a non-extradition warrant in Georgia.
Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan stated, “Our officer responded in accordance with his training by calling for additional officers and first checking on the other individual from the single car accident. There was no foot chase initiated.”
