Three Austin taco trucks conquered countless culinary competitors to earn a place on online review service Yelp’s list of top 100 taco spots in the country.

Granny’s Tacos, a food truck located on East Seventh Street, snagged fourth place for their exceptional breakfast tacos. Yelp recommended the chilaquiles tacos, in particular.

Granny's Tacos on East Seventh Street is operated by Maria Rios and Armando Vazquez, who serve a variety of tacos, quesadillas and burritos.

The American-Statesman’s Matthew Odam said of Granny’s Tacos in his 2020 list of best Austin tacos: “Maria Rios makes some of the best breakfast tacos in town, like chilaquiles served with a trio of salsas, and her talents extend to lunch with the citrus and spice of soft al pastor on bubbled homemade flour tortillas, and an alambres that combines steak and chorizo.”

The next Austin spot on the list is Cuantos Tacos, sitting at 54th place. Foodies can find the truck in Arbor Food Park on East 12th Street. Cuantos Tacos offers not only tacos but quesadillas and sometimes sweetbreads.

Cuantos Tacos makes some of the best tacos in the U.S., according to Yelp.

Odam also wrote: “But you’ll definitely find nicely salted suadero, funky (in the best way) longaniza and the slippery earth of champiñones wrapped in doubled-up corn tortillas and showered with cilantro and onion. Drizzle some of the roja salsa for a dusky singe.”

Taking Yelp’s spot for 89th best taco spot in the U.S. is Flavia’s Kitchen on West Oltorf Street. Their menu boasts breakfast tacos, carnitas gorditas, tostadas and more. Several Yelp reviews rave about the kindness of Flavia herself, including one user who said the truck catered his wife’s birthday party: “Before we even booked them, Flavia treated us to a tasting of her different tacos, salsas and aguas frescas. Everything was outstanding and some of the best homemade corn tortillas I've ever had.”

According to Yelp, the list’s rankings were determined using their users’ reviews: “We identified businesses in the restaurants and food categories with a large concentration of reviews mentioning ‘taco,’ then ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning ‘taco.’ If a chain appeared on the list more than once, we only included the highest rated location.”

Yelp released the list in honor of National Taco Day (Oct.4), as well as to tie into its Taco Trailblazer contest. The reviews website also will sponsor a week of free taco events from Sept. 26-30. Go to yelp.com/events/austin-taco-trailblazer-yelp-austins-free-week-of-tacos for more information.
