Follow The Independent's live coverage of all the action in the FA Women’s Super League today.

A crowd of over 47,000 turned up to the Emirates Stadium, a record attendance for the WSL in England, to see Arsenal beat Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby. It was one-way traffic throughout and in truth the eventual 4-0 scoreline was the least the Gunners merited, after Beth Mead scored early on to set the tone of the game. Vivianne Miedema scored twice, with Raffaele also heading in in between the Dutchwoman’s brace.

Arsenal beat Brighton 4-0 in the season opener to get their campaign off to a great start and now move to six points from two games, while Spurs edged out Leicester 2-1 to open with a win themselves - but will now need to regroup after a heavy defeat.

We will bring you all the reaction and updates from today's game in the live blog below:

Miedema scores brace as Arsenal thrash Tottenham in front of record WSL crowd

It was Boxing Day 1920 when a crowd of this number last watched a women’s league match in England. The men of the Football Association were so shocked by the scene at Goodison Park – as Dick, Kerr Ladies defeated local rivals St Helens in front of over 50,000 – that they voted to ban women’s football, an order which lasted for 50 years. A further half-century later, as Arsenal thrashed Tottenham in another local derby, the difference is the change these players are fuelling is now irreversible.

In the end, the ease in which Arsenal calmly and surgically played through and then ruthlessly dispatched their rivals Tottenham was a contrast to the history of the occasion.
