3 deaths, 317 new COVID-19 cases on Cape and Islands

There were 9,091 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number of cases to 1,869,603 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.     

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 1,176 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 170,999.     

As of Sept. 21, 194 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 590 total patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the state agency reported.   

Fifty patients were in intensive care units, or ICUs, and 11 patients were intubated.  

Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties case numbers higher  

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, state health officials said Barnstable County posted 298 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 43,862 since the pandemic started. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) reported eight new coronavirus cases, for a to-date total of 4,130. Nantucket County reported 11 new cases, for a total of 3,735.    

Case numbers are higher than last week’s report, which showed 276 new cases on the Cape and Islands. 

The new boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna target both the original virus and the most recent variants, called BA.4 and BA.5. Pfizer-BioNTech shots will be available to anyone 12 and older, while Moderna's will be for adults.

The state’s 14-day positivity rate was 7.44%. The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 9.02%, and 5.55% for Dukes and Nantucket counties.     

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 21 patients with coronavirus, including one who was in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported two patients, with one patient in the ICU. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital had no patients. Nantucket Cottage Hospital had two patients being treated for coronavirus.  

Deaths of individuals with confirmed cases of COVID-19

State health officials said Thursday there were 45 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 20,251 since the pandemic began.      

There were 13 deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths from probable cases is 1,395 in Massachusetts.     

Barnstable County posted three new deaths, the state agency reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 657 in Barnstable County. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 21 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Barnstable (117; 11,292; 10.34%); Bourne (56; 4,175; 8.91%); Brewster (16; 1,711; 5.96%); Chatham (14; 1,024; 11.35%); Dennis (27; 2,727; 7.87%); Eastham (11; 594; 8.27%); Falmouth (81; 5,452; 9.21%); Harwich (18; 2,453; 6.95%); Mashpee (36; 3,037; 7.56%); Orleans (20; 922; 12.3%): Provincetown (less than five; 483; 1.56%); Sandwich (44; 4,134; 10.88%); Truro (less than five; 200; 2.94%); Wellfleet (less than five; 327; 7.41%) and Yarmouth (60; 5,331; 9.6%).
