When you win 3 games in a row that’s called a win streak and Effingham dominated their way to continue the winning ways with a 48-13 win over Taylorville.
Hearts took control early and scored often. Effingham special teams showed up early as the Hearts would come in and block the first Taylorville punt of the night. That set up Effingham in Taylorville territory to begin the drive and five plays later, all on runs by Evan Waymoth. Waymoth capped it off with a nine yard touchdown run to make it 7-0. Taylorville would be forced to punt again and this time a low snapped made Tornadoes punter Will Blue tuck it in and run. Effingham would stop him and take over once again already in the red-zone. The short drive was finished off in just four plays with another Waymoth touchdown to make it 13-0.
Waymoth would get his third touchdown of the first half from three yards out, as the Hearts took advantage of great field position to make it 20-0. Effingham would force a Taylorville fumble picked up by Logan Heil, who had a nice run back until being tackled inside Tornadoes territory once again. It would not take Effingham long to score just two plays and Weldon Dunston bounced it outside and ran 18 yards to the house to make it 27-0.
Taylorville would get on board for the first time late in the second quarter on a broken assignment in the Hearts secondary. It ended up in a 35 yard touchdown pass from Baron Odam to Finn Niemann to make the score 27-7. Effingham got on the board one more time before the half on the very next possession, a six yard run from Dunston again to make the score 34-7 at the half.
The second half didn’t start out so well for the Hearts and when Taylorville picked up an early first down, Head Coach Brett Hefner called a time out and huddled the entire team. Whatever was said to get the team back focused worked and a stop was soon made. The Hearts and Dunston would find the endzone again from 12 yards out to make the score 41-7. Odam would throw and interception tipped into the hands to London Rinkel. Hearts would capitalize on their final score of the night on a one yard score from Muhammad Freeman. Tornadoes would score again before the game would end, a great drive finished off by senior Seth Hughes to make the final score 48-13.
Effingham improves to 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Apollo Conference. Taylorville falls to 1-4 and 1-3 in the Apollo.
Next week is homecoming for Effingham against Mt. Zion and Taylorville hosts Charleston.
