An escaped inmate charged with attempted murder after beating two Japanese women on the Oregon Coast pleaded guilty in court Friday to attempted murder and other charges.
Jedaiah Lunn was accused of escaping from an inmate work crew in Tillamook County in April, and then attacking the women at a nearby campground.
Police say he beat the women with a sick and stole their car.
Both victims were seriously hurt.
They joined Friday’s hearing by phone.
Lunn prepared a statement apologizing to the victims.
"What it comes down to is this isn't about me. It's about what happened to them and needs to be made right. Because of that I am ready and willing to accept any punishment that is deemed necessary by the state of Oregon, because I feel so terrible about what I have done,” he said.
Lunn was sentenced to 34.5 years in prison.
During the hearing, the judge forcefully questioned the Department of Correction’s role in running and overseeing the work detail Lunn was assigned to, as well as the circumstances around his escape.
The DOC was not present at the hearing, and the judge noted it was not on trial in the case.
KATU reached out for the DOC for a statement.
