HS Football: Fredonia Loses to Salamanca, Dunkirk Falls to 0-4

Fredonia met its toughest opponent to date in the fourth week of the high school football season, and the contest produced a high-scoring affair. On Friday at the Orange Bowl, the Hillbillies held a slim halftime lead over Class C South opponent Salamanca before the Warriors took control in the second half, handing the Billies their first loss of the season by a score of 40-30 in a game broadcast on WDOE.

Fredonia (3-1, 1-1) led 17-14 at halftime, with seniors Micah Davis and Keegan Whitfield scoring on touchdown plays of 3 and 28 yards, respectively, in the first half. The Billies also got a successful 29-yard field goal by Sal Tabone. Salamanca (3-1, 2-0) got its points from sophomore quarterback Maddox Isaac on a 74-yard touchdown run and senior Jesse Stahlman on a 3-yard touchdown run. The Warriors grabbed their first lead in the 3rd quarter when Stahlman completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Carmine Hoag. Fredonia retook the lead, 24-21 when Whitfield scored his second touchdown of the game on a 74-yard pass from Ethan Fry. The seesaw affair continued with Salamanca regaining the lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Isaac.  That marked the third and final lead change of the game. Late in the quarter, the Warriors extended the lead to 34-24 on a 59-yard touchdown run by Stahlman. In the 4th quarter, Stahlman added his third rushing touchdown of the night. The extra point was blocked, keeping it a two-possession game. Fredonia trimmed its deficit to 10 points on a 23-yard touchdown grab by Tim Field, but the two-point conversion was no good, and the Billies could not get any closer.

Keegan Whitfield turned in a monster receiving performance for Fredonia, logging eight receptions for 225 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort. Ethan Fry went 16-for-33 passing for 319 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. For Salamanca, Jesse Stahlman ran 20 times for 148 yards to go with his three touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Dunkirk got blown out by Maryvale 45-6 on Friday, dropping the Marauders' record on the season to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in Class B-2. The Marauders' only points of the contest came in the 3rd quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run by Quanteer Neallard.
