St. Louis Cardinals future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols has reached baseball immortality.
Friday night, Pujols blasted home runs No. 699 and No. 700 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in front of a raucous crowd at Dodger Stadium.
In the top of the third inning, Pujols laced a 1-2 pitch from Dodgers starter Andrew Heaney deep into the left field bleachers, bringing him just one away from the legendary mark.
With two outs and two Cardinals on base in the fourth inning, the Dodgers pulled Heaney in favor of Phil Bickford. The first batter to face Bickford? You guessed it, Pujols.
Two pitches into the at-bat, Pujols slammed a hanging slider out of the yard, landing nearly in the same spot as his first homer of the night.
The 42-year-old, who has announced his intention to retire at the end of the season, now joins an exclusive group.
Pujols becomes just the fourth player in baseball history to hit 700 home runs. Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Barry Bonds (762) are the only other players to accomplish the feat.
Drafted by St. Louis in the 13th round of the 1999 MLB Draft, Pujols spent 11 seasons with the Cardinals before leaving to join the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent in 2012.
After 11 years away, Pujols re-joined the Cardinals in March, signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the club.
Since returning, Pujols has enjoyed a career renaissance. Pujols is batting .263/.337/.519 with 21 home runs and 58 RBI in 101 games for St. Louis.
