Syracuse, N.Y. — It was a rematch of the 2021 Section III Class AA championship Friday night and No. 19 state-ranked Cicero-North Syracuse proved it is still a force to be reckoned with in Class AA.
The Northstars cruised to a 41-19 win over No. 24 state-ranked Baldwinsville Friday night.
Cicero-North Syracuse’s defense was staunch and held a typically dominant Baldwinsville run game to just 94 yards.
“We challenged our kids all week up front about trying to match their physicality. (Baldwinsville’s) always a very physical team and our kids came out and they did a great job matching the physicality up front with them,” C-NS coach Dave Kline said. “I’m really proud of them for that work that they did.”
C-NS’ offense started off slow on Friday. The Northstars turned the ball over on downs on its first possession and threw an interception on its second. The Bees were unable to capitalize on either of the Northsars’ mishaps and that’s when C-NS’ offense picked it up and looked like as prolific as we’ve grown accustomed to seeing.
“I think it was just more getting comfortable with what they were gonna do, what they were gonna give us and getting Jaxon (Razmovski) comfortable and our offensive line comfortable,” Kline said of the team’s slow start. “And I think once they kind of got into a little bit of a groove, then Jaxon got hot, started throwing the ball really well, line started blocking... So we had to adjust to that, but the kids did a great job.”
Quarterback Jaxon Razmovski began the scoring with a four-yard scramble. A made extra-point would make the score 7-0 in the first quarter.
Razmovski was the spark all night for the Northstars. The junior quarterback finished the night with three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns to lead the team.
“(Razmovski) has an unbelievable knack for making plays, scrambling the pocket, scrambling outside the pocket, running the ball. He’s got an unbelievable heart, great arm,” Kline said. “There were several plays during the game that he actually told us, ‘Hey, I wanna run this play.’ So, we called it, we trusted him, and he was right.”
After C-NS went ahead 7-0, the Bees took control of the game and put pressure on the Northstars.
After making a switch at quarterback, Greg Marinelli led the Bees on two scoring drives before the end of the first half. Marinelli scrambled for a nine-yard score and tossed a 69-yard pass to Griffin Killian for another score. Baldwinsville was unable to convert either extra-point try, so the Bees led 12-7 with 46 seconds left in the half.
From there, the Northstars showed why they are the defending Class AA sectional champions.
Razmovski completed a 58-yard pass to Tristan Johnson which set up a one-yard score for Razmovski. The extra point was good and C-NS took a 14-12 lead into halftime.
After being bottled up for the first half, Baldwinsville went back to their running back Brandon Levin to begin things in the third quarter. On the team’s first play from scrimmage, Levin fumbled and C-NS recovered. C-NS later scored to go ahead 21-12 in the third.
Baldwinsville held tough, though. Marinelli completed a 47-yard pass to Kaleb Paul to put the Bees’ in the red zone. Marinelli was banged up on the play. On the next play, Nicholas Wellman took over at QB for the Bees and C-NS hit him to force a fumble.
“Defense played well. We gave up a couple big plays, unfortunately,” Kline said. “(Marinelli) is real shifty. He’s real talented and fast, but our kids, they bent a few times, we didn’t break, we kept rebounding, we got some important turnovers when we needed them.”
C-NS would cap off another drive with a Razmovski rushing touchdown to go ahead 27-12 early in the fourth quarter.
The Bees still refused to go away quietly. Marinelli put Baldwinsville on his back the following drive. The junior scrambled for a 48-yard gain before eventually scoring on a four-yard run to narrow the deficit to 27-19 with 7:57 left in the game.
That would be as close as the Bees would get. Razmovski continued his stellar performance with another touchdown pass to Johnson and Farouk Ibrahim Jr. added a late rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 41-19. That would be enough for C-NS to pick up the win.
The Northstars (3-1) will hit the road to take on Henninger (1-2) next Friday. The Bees (2-1) are home against CBA (3-0) next Friday.
