FLINT, Mich. — Beecher's Homecoming game is quieter with no students at the stands Friday night.
Following the fights that broke out at last weekend's football game against Beecher and Flint Southwestern High School, administration at both schools have decided to place restriction on who are allowed in their football games.
That was also the case tonight at Beecher for their Homecoming game.
Originally, there were not very many people at the game, but things slowly started to fill up in the parking lot and in the bleachers.
This is all in the light of the District deciding students will no longer be allowed to attend games following the fights that happened last week.
But, parents seems to be on board.
"Unfortunately, it went down like that, but in a way it's a good thing for both sides," said Scooter, a parent to a football player on the field. "It was ridiculous, it was almost like 60 kids fighting out there—parents, too."
In a letter from Flint Community School's Superintendent—detailing how students will no longer be allowed to attend all remaining home football games and how all spectator's will need pre-approval—Beecher High School also sent letters home stating similar changes will be implemented for the remainder of their home games, as well. Including Friday's Homecoming game.
"What happened last week was really out of control. So for parents safety. Last week, I had my 4 year old daughter out there and I was uncomfortable with it," said Scooter.
Scooter said while nether teams has a role in what happened during last week's football game, it is unfortunate that they have to also deal with the consequences.
"It's unfortunate for the whole football team because I know the kids play better when they have the fans behind them, but they're going to have to play for themselves now," said Scooter. "Plus as parents we have to do better on that because that's where it starts at. If you can't control your kids at home how do you expect a stranger to control them."
For the first half of the game, there were no incidents. However, there were a few students turned away at the gate.
Because of the restriction, there were several what seemed to be students and patrons in the parking lot trying to see the game.
As for Homecoming court and the Beecher Homecoming parade, it is scheduled to happen tomorrow.
