WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) – Some residents in West Columbia are calling for change after a deadly crash this week near the intersection of Augusta Road and 12th Street. One of the victims was 16-year-old Paris Franklin.
“It’s just mind-blowing. The fact that she’s not with us. I can’t even wrap my mind around that,” said Brittany Boyd, a longtime friend to Paris and her family.
She’s heartbroken about the Sunday evening wreck that cut Paris’ life short.
“She always had that business mindset,” said Boyd. “Full of life, so sweet, and just an amazing individual.”
A video captured by a nearby business owner shows some of the aftermath of the accident. Officials say the SUV Paris and her stepfather, Dimitri Henderson, were riding in collided with a semi-truck at the 12th Street and Augusta Road intersection. Paris and the driver of the semi-truck, 56-year-old Alton Keisler, were pronounced dead at the scene. Henderson is said to be recovering at a local hospital.
“You think to yourself, what do you say,” Boyd also said. “Why did this happen to us? Why did this happen to her?” she questioned.
Sunday's wreck has others like John Cherry, who runs a barbershop less than a block away from where the crash happened, fired up. He thinks more can be done to prevent tragedies like this one.
“There’s a blind spot over here,” said Cherry. “Maybe a couple caution signs, and at least have cameras so we can see what actually happened on the wreck.”
Boyd has since created a GoFundMe page to help cover the White Knoll High School student’s funeral expenses and raise awareness.
“I’ll miss her personality. I’ll miss how honest she was,” Boyd also said.
SC Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. WACH FOX News reached out to SC’s department of transportation to see if there are any changes planned for the area. SC DOT representatives say they’re waiting on the results of the investigation to determine their next steps.
