The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Floodplain Assessment for the Technical Area 72 Outdoor Live Fire Range Gate Installation Project for a 15-day public review and comment period beginning with publication of this notice.
DOE/NNSA is proposing new construction in lower Sandia Canyon at TA-72 at the Outdoor Live Fire Range facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The proposed upgrades are intended to improve range safety.
The project activities within the 100-year floodplain include:
- Installation of three gates at the all-terrain vehicle/pedestrian walkway bridges; and
- Replacement of the main entrance gate to the range with a permanent gate. These four gates will be used to control vehicle access to individual firing ranges and add a visual aid to deter pedestrians from walking into individual firing ranges. The three proposed gates at the all-terrain vehicle/pedestrian bridges will be approximately 10 feet in length and four feet in height made of steel tubing (e.g., agricultural/farm style gates). Each gate will be mounted on one side to an approximately -four-inch diameter, five-foot tall metal pole set in a base of concrete.
After the close of the public comment period Oct. 8, and prior to issuing a Floodplain Statement of Findings DOE/NNSA will reevaluate the alternatives to the proposed action in a floodplain, identify mitigation measures that would avoid or minimize impacts to the floodplain and take into account all substantive comments received during the public comment period.
