David Nyle Cox

David Nyle Cox, 68, passed away September 22, 2022 from a long battle with cancer. He was born February 6, 1954 to Nyle Malin and the late L. Kay Hanson Cox. He was married to Zina Petersen Cox in the Salt Lake temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints April 27, 1976.

David was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving as a bishopric counselor, branch president counselor, ward and stake clerk, ward executive secretary, Elders quorum president, High Priest Group Leader, and many other callings. He received his eagle scout and served as a scoutmaster and 11 year-old scout leader for many years.

David served two youth missions in the Southwest Indian and Northern Indian Missions and later served a full-time mission in the Arizona Holbrook Mission. Later in life he and Zina served three years in the BYU China Teachers Program, teaching at Shandong University and serving in the Central China International District Branch.

David attended Lehi schools, graduating from Lehi High in 1972. He graduated from BYU in 1981 with a degree in elementary education and in 1986 received his MEd in school administration. He taught grades 5 and 6 at Lehi Elementary, Orchard Elementary, and Sego Lily Elementary. He taught 25 summers at Alpine School District’s Clear Creek summer camp. During his career he created and helped direct Alpine School District’s Knowledge Bowl Program. After retiring he also taught at Odyssey Charter School.

David was very involved in politics, serving in Republican local party leadership for 8 years and then as a State Legislator for 8 years. During his 4 terms in office, he restored the legislation that allowed communities to create their own school district, which resulted in the creation of the Canyons School District.

David especially loved working and playing with his 7 children, 30 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. He lived with his face toward building Zion! He is survived by his beloved wife Zina, father Nyle, children; Kadie (Tony) Johnson, Ammon (Melanie), Seth (Carolyn), Rachel (Carlos) Zumaya, Caleb (Bethany), Evan (Anna), and Alisa (CJ) Crawshaw, siblings; Jordan, Carolyn, Nathan (Erin), and Kristi. He was preceded in death by his mother Kay, sister Kalin and brother Loren.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Lehi South Stake Center, 500 West 600 South. Family and friends may call on Monday evening, September 26, 2022 from 6-8:00 PM at the church and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday morning. Interment will be in the Lehi City Cemetery.
