Tanev 23.09.22

Chris Tanev continues to surprise.
In a good way, of course.

After suffering a torn labrum during the Flames first-round playoff matchup against Dallas last season, the expectation is that it would take 4-6 months for him to be back at full speed.
Surprise!
Here he is as a full participant at training camp - and the very front end of that lengthy recovery window - grinning from ear to ear with his signature toothless smile.
"It's great to be back, it's important to be in camp and participating," he said. "If you miss camp, you're behind the eight-ball and it's tough to catch up. Takes longer than you think."
"We'll open it up as much as I am allowed to. Obviously, Game 1 is the plan, but we still have three weeks until camp is over. We'll go through the progressions and open it up as I'm told to."

"It's great to be back"

The first couple of skates have seen him partnered with new arrival MacKenzie Weegar, with plenty of buzz building around the duo.
It's early, but if they do move forward as a pair for the regular season, it has all makings of being one of the league's best.
"He moves the puck well, skates well, obviously had a great year last year and I think he's going to bring a lot to our defence," Tanev said of Weegar. "That's one of his biggest strength, being able to break the puck out and get them up to our skilled forwards.
"If we play together, we'll complement each other. It's still early in camp you get to know people, get to know how they play and where they are in certain situations. That comes with getting out there and playing together.
"We've got a deep group (on the blueline), a lot of guys back from last year. We all like each other, good friends off the ice and it goes a long way. We'll get to know the new guys here, integrate them here. They're going to try different partners out and see what it works and move on from there."
With plenty of new faces, training camp also presents a time to bond and get to know one another off the ice.
And what better way than with fantasy football.
"Yeah week one I killed him (Weegar)," he laughed. "But I lost last week, so I'll have to get off my high horse.
"It's easy to bond, go out for dinner or lunch to get to know guys. When I came here guys did that for me. It's hard going to a new team. Especially going from Florida to Calgary it's going to be a transition, a lot of things are going to be different but as a group we welcome new guys as much as we can and make them feel comfortable.
"If you aren't comfortable it's hard to go on the ice and perform your best."
