LAKE ODESSA, Mich. — A woman in her 80's drove herself to a police station after being shot in Ionia County Tuesday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers say the shooting happened at a home while the elderly woman was passing out pamphlets about Proposal 3.

State troopers say someone shot the elderly Ionia County woman in the shoulder, after an alleged verbal altercation transpired.

"Right to Life Michigan" says the woman was representing the nonprofit by visiting community members to talk about Proposal 3, which would strike down Michigan's 1931 abortion ban.

The organization, which is encouraging people to oppose the proposal, says a man who was not part of the conversation shot the woman as she was leaving the house.

State police say the woman drove herself to the Lake Odessa Police Department to report the shooting.

She was then taken to the hospital for treatment. She has since been released and is still recovering from the gunshot wound.

The motive for the shooting is still unclear but the organization said a heated conversation occurred leading up to the shooting.

Troopers say when their investigation is complete, they will forward a report to the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide if anyone involved will face charges.
