Louisville woman worries police chase endangered innocent bystanders
DaTanya Morgan was walking to her car Thursday afternoon when she decided to pause and oil her dry feet.
Suddenly, she heard a loud crash and looked up to see a silver sedan speeding past her house, followed by Louisville Metro Police Department cruisers.
Bank robbery suspect Corey Ware had just crashed into a car at the corner of 28th and Jefferson streets, she said, and nearly crashed into her parked car before forcing another driver to swerve to avoid a collision.
"I was freaking out," she said. "I was hyperventilating because I'm a victim of a high-speed LMPD chase."
Ware led police on a 42-minute chase throughout the city, according to his arrest citation.
The pursuit began in Fern Creek and took him down the Watterson Expressway in east Louisville and through various streets of west Louisville before ending on Eastern Parkway near the University of Louisville.
He faces two counts of robbery in the second degree and one count of robbery in the first degree, along with other charges stemming from the police chase.
Police say he robbed a WesBanco on South Hurstbourne Parkway and a First Financial Bank on Taylorsville Road on Sept. 16.
On Thursday, he struck again, this time at the First Financial Bank on Bardstown Road in Fern Creek.
According to his arrest citation, Ware "indicated he was armed and demanded money, stating 'You're getting robbed, brother!'"
The pursuit occurred when police confronted him at a home on Winter Garden Court, not far from the banks police say he robbed. Over the course of the chase, Ware crashed into one police cruiser and the car parked at 28th and Jefferson streets.
Morgan believes it was a miracle nobody was hurt.
She also thinks LMPD should have ended its pursuit, which forced JCPS to delay school buses from taking students home just as school was letting out.
"You have to think about the other people's lives that are at stake," she said. "I understand you want to get the bad guy, but is it worth you killing three or four innocent civilians?"
LMPD's standard operating procedures allow police pursuits in the cases of violent felonies, including what's called "robbery 1."
A spokesperson for LMPD also noted police found a gun in Ware's car and he was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Ware was on probation for drug charges.
