The hottest festival in Pueblo kicks off for the 28th year celebrating local farmers

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The 28th annual Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival kicks off Friday, Sep. 23 at 3 p.m. celebrating local produce and farmers.

The festival will have live entertainment, nearly 200 street vendors, and of course Pueblo's famous roasted chiles. Chile farmers, culinary demonstrations, and farmers' markets will be lined up on the grounds in downtown Pueblo for three days.

The chihuahua and friends pet parade will return Sunday at 11 a.m. along with the annual jalapeno eating contest at 11 in the SRDA parking lot.

The festival is huge for local farmers in Pueblo and really benefits the community.

"The community really looks forward to this festival every year," Greater Pueblo Chamber President and CEO Duane Nava said. "About 140,000 people come to this festival on the weekend. It's a huge economic boost for our community. Not only for these farmers and our downtown area but hotels are all booked up and local businesses are busy buzzing all weekend."

New this year, there will be a balloon glow Friday night along the downtown riverwalk. Followed by a balloon fest featuring 13 hot air balloons filling the Pueblo sky. Lift-off and inflation will begin at 6:45 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings.

There are free parking garages located at S. Main Street and Grand, as well as City Center Drive. Daily shuttle pickup and drop-off are also available from the Midtown parking lot.

Tickets are available for $5 presale or $6 at the gate.

Friday the festival hours are from 3 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
