Route 7 near Bailey's Crossroads reopens after cars hit by bullets

No motives for shots fired have been released.

BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, Va. — A portion of Route 7 was closed in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia Friday afternoon and police asked people to shelter in place while they investigate several cars hit by gunfire.

Around 11:15 a.m., Fairfax County Police officers were sent to the Crossroads Place Shopping Center for a report of shots fired. Police said two witnesses outside a nearby Starbucks heard glass breaking and saw a car with its window broken.

At one point, police believed witnesses heard a high-powered rifle but have since come to the conclusion that the weapon used with not a high caliber firearm.

At least three rounds hit cars in the shopping center parking lot. No one was shot or injured and police are not calling it an active shooter situation as no additional rounds have been fired. Police do not have anyone in custody, and continue to search for the shooter.

All pedestrian and street traffic in the potential line of sight of a shooter was blocked off. The roadway was reopened to the public around 5:40 p.m.

The bullets also remain in the cars due to ongoing safety concerns.

Earlier in the afternoon, police believed the rounds of gunfire may have come from a high level of an apartment complex. Around 5:30 p.m., investigators changed that theory, believing the gunfire came from a handgun at someone on the ground.

No motives for shots fired have been released.

"There is nothing at this point to suggest that anybody was targeted here," Spital said. "We are certainly investigating all possible circumstances. Luckily nobody was in the vehicles and nobody was struck, but we're taking all precautions necessary."

Spital added that officers are not currently going door to door, and the department is asking the public to contact them with any information. Any businesses or buildings that may have surveillance cameras that captured the scene are asked to reach out as well.
