KSP responds to officer involved shooting in Daviess County

OWENSBORO, Ky (WEHT) – Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting in Daviess County.

It happened on the 9300 block of Highway 60 near the town of Stanley.

Troopers say Gregory Embry, 39, of Owensboro. was shot after he allegedly attempted to attack a deputy with a hammer.

The deputy identified as Deputy Alex Cooms of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

Daviess County Sheriff Barry Smith says it started as a response to someone breaking in to two homes on highway 60.

“We received a couple different phone calls from two different residents here on 60, stating someone had broken in and to their home and actually assaulted one of the subjects in one of the residences,” he said.

The callers also told dispatchers the suspect was running down the middle of the road, screaming and had a hammer, and broke windows. A woman in one of the homes was injured during an incident before the shooting.

“He goes a couple residents down, breaks in a window, climbs in to that window of the residence, caused an altercation there, damages more property inside that residence,” said Sheriff Smith.

A deputy found the suspect in the third house, and the shooting happened later. Investigators say the suspect was taken to the hospital. Sheriff smith says the deputy was unharmed.

“Never heard of anything like this,” said Nancy Edelen, who has lived in this area for more than four decades.

“I just thought, ‘who would do this? Down here, who would do this? Because everybody knows everybody,” she said.

KSP says Embry is in critical condition as of this evening. Kentucky State Police are investigating the officer involved shooting, but Daviess Co. Sheriffs Deputies are still investigating the incidents that happened in the other homes before the shooting.
