Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is calling on residents to help families who are struggling to buy diapers before the start of Diaper Needs Awareness Week.
"We want to make sure that our federal government knows that it's important, that in the programs that they provide for other services, an essential service is providing diapers to those moms who are in need," he said.
The Allied Foundation is now working with 13 pediatric offices in Nassau to help provide diapers to local families.
It comes as prices continue to increase and government assistance programs still don't cover the cost of the diapers.
According to the National Diaper Bank, about 1 in 3 U.S. families lack enough diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy.
"Our work is really important to make sure babies have access to clean diapers," says Heather Edwards, of Allied Foundation. "Their health is really important as they are our future."
Diaper Needs Awareness Week starts Saturday and runs through Oct. 2.
There will be several diaper giveaways events in Roslyn, Hempstead and Patchogue during that time.
