Indigo Blue Coffeehouse in Pine Bluff

I

I am certainly no stranger to coffeehouses in this state. If there is a good one in Arkansas, then chances are I’ll eventually find it. Helping spread the java joy to readers around the state happens to be a great passion of mine. Heck, I’ve even stayed above and next to coffeehouses, thanks to fun AirBnB’s in Eureka Springs and Morrilton, respectively.

There is nothing like the coffee lab in Bentonville, Speakeasy Café in Bryant is a great place to hang out, and you won’t want to miss Red Light Roastery on your next visit to Hot Springs.

You get my drift.

Well, now add Indigo Blue Coffeehouse in Pine Bluff to the mix. The setting–an expansive, refurbished downtown space–is comfortable, the hallmark of any true coffeehouse. Exposed brick and old-school tiled flooring show the age of the building but also add a ton of character to the space. The walls are covered with a variety of historically significant framed items, and you can even find a full-on bookstore in the back.

While there are live music and poetry readings on the weekends, at 10 a.m. on this Thursday morning, things are quiet inside Indigo Blue. Almost too quiet. And frankly, the lack of some soft background music proved to be my only knock on the coffeehouse. That’s an easy fix.

Needing a mid-morning pick-me-up, I ordered my usual, a cold brew (black), but also added an egg sandwich and turkey club to my tab. Hey, I have to report on the food, right? Everything was prepared by owner Maryann Lee. From what I’ve read, she is the backbone of Indigo Blue. Nothing about my brief interaction with her proved otherwise. There is passion in Ms. Lee’s voice when she talks about Pine Bluff and her business.

She also happens to be a pretty darn good cook. That egg sandwich with two fried eggs, spinach, and sliced tomato, all on two whole wheat rounds, was everything I wanted in a breakfast handheld. Meticulous in its construction, this simply satisfying sandwich was highlighted by a good fry job on those eggs. Nothing was sloppy or overwhelming about the sandwich, but rather just a nice, healthy breakfast item that I would not hesitate to order again.

Same with the turkey club. I loved the thick, grilled white bread, sliced turkey, and smokey bacon. I mean, what’s not to love about those ingredients? The rest of the menu seemed pretty straightforward, with a decent selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches. There is a quiche I would like to try next time, and I have no doubt that the chicken salad needs to happen as well.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Indigo Blue Coffeehouse. Pine Bluff has something to be proud of in this business. Frequent patrons already know this, but if you are in the area and still have not visited the coffeehouse, then go find out for yourself.
