Seminole County begins sandbag preps ahead of tropical storm arrival
SANIKA: THANK YOU. WITH FLORIDA IN THE CURRENT PATH OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION NINE, SANDBAGGING OPERATIONS IN SEMINOLE COUNTY ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY. THAT IS WHERE WE FIND TONY ATKINS LIVE. WE KNOW PEOPLE ARE LOADING UP. TONY: IT IS BEEN A STEADY STREAM OF PEOPLE COMING THROUGH. TAKE A LOOK, YOU CAN SEE A COUPLE GETTING THEIR TRUCK LOADED UP, MAKING SURE THEY HAVE WHAT THEY NEED FOR THE STORM. THE COUNTY HAS BEEN ON HAND TODAY, IT IS A FREE FOR ALL WHERE PEOPLE CAN TAKE WHAT THEY NEED. THE COUNTY HAS BEEN ON HAND MAKING SURE THE SUPPLY IS MAINTAINED. ANYONE NOT JUST SEMINOLE COUNTY RESIDENTS ARE WELCOME TO COME AND TAKE WHAT THEY MAY NEED. THE COUNTY SAYS IT IS PREPARING THESE OPERATIONS EARLY BECAUSE OF THE RECENT RAIN, RAIN WE ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE COMING. THEY DID SAY THEY WANT TO CAPITALIZE ON THIS TIME WINDOW TO MAKE SURE FOLKS ARE READY FOR NEXT WEEK. THIS IS HAPPENING IN THE BOOMBAH SEMINOLE COUNTY SPORTS OVERFLOW LOT. YOU CAN PICK UP SANDBAGS UNTIL 7:00 TONIGHT. TOMORROW AND SUNDAY, THOUGH, THE SITE WILL OPEN AT 8:00 A.M. AND WILL GO UNTIL 7:00 P.M. EACH HOUSEHOLD WILL BE ALLOWED UP TO 15 BAGS. NO MATTER WHAT COMES OUR WAY NEXT WEEK, THE COUNTY SAY IT -- THE COUNTY SAYS THEY WANT PEOPLE TO BE READY. >> WHETHER WE GET THE STORM OR NOT, WE ARE GOING TO SEE SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN RAIN. SO, HAVING THOSE SANDBAGS, IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOOD-PRONE AREA, IS SO IMPORTANT. TONY: A FULL BAG OF THESE CAN WEIGH UP TO 30 POUNDS. THE COUNTY RECOMMENDS YOU COME WITH A PARTNER. Seminole County is beginning sandbag operations Friday as Tropical Depression 9 has Florida firmly set in its sights.Residents should go to Boombah Seminole County Sports Overflow Lot at 3450 East Lake Mary Boulevard, Sanford. PICKUP TIMES:9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 & Sunday, Sept. 25 Bags: Up to 15 per household "Empty bags and dirt will be available to all residents of Seminole County; residents should bring their own shovel and gloves and be prepared to fill and load the bags themselves. Staff is unable to provide assistance. Filled sandbags can weigh approximately 30 pounds, so it is recommended to bring a partner to assist," a news release states. “Whether we get the storm or not, we are going to see significant increases in rain. So, having those sandbags, if you live in a flood-prone area, is so important," said Steven Lerner, Sr. Planner, Seminole Co. Office of Emergency Management.Anyone is welcome to pick up sandbags, a county official told WESH 2 News.
