DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., September 22, 2022 – The Mustangs would not call it an upset, but that is just what they did Thursday evening, as the No. 8-ranked Monroe men's soccer team took down No. 4 Daytona State College on their home turf to wrap up a challenging week in Florida. The Mustangs improve to 7-0-1 overall with the victory, while the Falcons fall to 7-2-0.
It did not take long for the Mustangs to jump out into the lead on Thursday. In the 15th minute,
Godwin Partey set up
Tony Yeboah for the game's first score, and Yeboah's team-leading eighth goal of the season, to put the Mustangs on top, 1-0.
The Mustangs doubled the lead with some incredible teamwork. A cross got to the top of the box, where
Adam Yousfi headed it in. Adam Ludwig passed it back off his head to
Taisei Iida, who jumped and hipped it back to Ludwig, who then tapped back up to Yousfi, who had space to shoot and fired it back to the left corner of the net and past the keeper to make it a 2-0 match in the 34th minute. In the 36th minute, Daytona State's Carlos Zambrano cut Monroe's lead in half, but that proved to be the final score for the remaining 55 minutes, as the Mustangs held on to win, 2-1.
Maurice Koenig picked up his seventh win of the season in net for Monroe, stopping two shots in the process. William Diaz took the loss for the Falcons, but made six saves.
The Mustangs tripled up the Falcons with an 18-6 advantage in total shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had seven of the game's 11 corner kicks.
The Mustangs get back to work next week when they take a trip to Mercer County Community College in West Windsor Township, N.J. on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
