SAN FRANCISCO – Cal men's tennis star Yuta Kikuchi advanced in singles and doubles on the first day of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Thursday at the California Tennis Club. He partnered with Carl Emil Overbeck to win in the doubles first round, while the Cal duo of Lucas Magnaudet and Ryder Jackson also won in the opening round.

The 62nd-ranked Kikuchi, the eighth seed in main draw singles, defeated Hawaii Axel Labrunie, 6-3, 6-0. The Cal graduate student next plays San Diego's Marvin Schaber in the round of 16 on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Also in main draw singles, Overbeck lost to Arizona's seventh-seeded and 32nd-ranked Jonas Ziverts, 6-3, 6-1, while Magnaudet fell to Arizona's 86th-ranked Colton Smith, 6-4, 6-2. Magnaudet next plays the Gaels' Watt in the singles consolation bracket on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
 
The second seed in main draw doubles, Kikuchi and Overbeck beat Pepperdine's Tim Zeitvogel and Daniel De Jonge, 8-6, in the round of 16. The Bears next play Arizona State's Max McKennon and Jacob Bullard in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m. In another part of the main draw, Jackson and Magnaudet beat James Watt and Thibaud Maxant of Saint Mary's, 8-3. The Bears face UC Santa Barbara's Julian DeSousa and Phillip Jordan in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday at 9 a.m.
 
Along with continued action from the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday, Cal's Alex Chang, John Kim and Mikey Wright start play in the Napa Valley Invitational at the Silverado Resort and Spa on Friday.
