The Casa de Peregrinos(CdP) food assistance nonprofit in Las Cruces kicked off its fourth annual food strike on Thursday.
The hunger strike consists of a 24-hour fast from food as well as advocacy for CdP's mission through social media and personal interactions.
"It consists of an individual setting up a fundraising page benefiting Casa de Peregrinos hunger strike on their Facebook page," said Lorenzo Alba, Jr., executive director of Casa de Peregrinos.
The advocacy and fundraising event aims to raise $60,000.
Alba Jr. said the nonprofit received a $20,000 match for the fundraiser from El Passo Electric, Western Sky Community Care and Molina Healthcare
"We're excited about making that announcement because it's some incentive for donors to hopefully donate because every dollar up to that $20,000 will be doubled," said Alba, Jr.
He explained that donations are especially important this year because of rising food costs due to inflation.
"We need to get this money this time because right now inflation that cost of food is really high we want to make sure that were able to cover some of those costs," Alba, Jr. added.
The food strike will end Friday morning.
